Alishan
Smoother, sweeter, more accessible than Lishan. The most widely-available high-mountain oolong style.
Alishan is the most widely-produced Taiwanese high-mountain oolong region. The lower-but-still-substantial altitude (1000-1800m) compared to Lishan, the lush forest-adjacent microclimate, and the well-developed tea farm infrastructure produce oolongs that drinkers often describe as smoother, sweeter, and more accessible than higher-elevation Taiwanese productions. The cup character emphasizes floral and creamy notes with less of the sharp mineral edge that Lishan can carry.
Alishan is also where many non-traditional cultivars get planted: Jin Xuan (Milk Oolong, 金萱), with its naturally milky-buttery character, is particularly common in Alishan productions. The region's broader accessibility — both physically (better roads, more farm infrastructure) and price-tier — makes Alishan high-mountain oolong many drinkers' entry point into the category. The annual harvests are larger than Lishan's; supply is more consistent.
