Menghai
Robust, structured, often bitter when young. Powerful aging trajectory; the classic Menghai character.
Menghai is among the most legendary pu-erh-producing prefectures in Yunnan. The Xishuangbanna prefecture in southern Yunnan contains several of the most prestigious pu-erh-producing mountains in the world: Bulang Mountain (布朗山, where Lao Banzhang produces some of the most sought-after gushu material in tea), Banzhang specifically (班章), Bada, Nannuo, and others. The cup character of Menghai material is typically more robust and structured than Lincang — often bitter when young (sometimes aggressively so) but with a powerful aging trajectory that produces some of the most complex aged sheng pu-erh in the world.
Menghai is also home to the Menghai Tea Factory (勐海茶厂), the most famous large-scale pu-erh producer in China. The factory's standard shou pu-erh recipes — 7572, 7542, and others coded by year and recipe — have become reference standards in the shou category. Authentic vintage Menghai Factory productions from the 1980s-1990s command substantial collector prices. The region thus produces both the most prestigious small-scale gushu sheng productions and the most reference-defining large-scale shou productions in the pu-erh world.
