Qimen Zhuye
The cultivar behind the distinctive "Keemun aroma" — orchid notes and wine-like fruit without actual smoke.
The Qimen Zhuye (祁门槠叶, "Qimen camellia leaf") is the heirloom cultivar that produces authentic Keemun black tea's distinctive cup character. The combination of this specific cultivar's natural aromatic compounds, the Qimen county microclimate, and traditional black tea processing produces the famous "Keemun aroma" — orchid floral notes and a wine-like fruity character that drinkers often describe as "smoky" without any actual smoke in processing. This is the source of the Keemun signature that distinguishes it from any other black tea worldwide.
Qimen Zhuye plantings outside the Qimen county protected production area produce tea that's recognizably similar but doesn't carry the full Keemun aroma profile. The cultivar-terroir-processing trio is required for authentic Keemun character. Commercial pressures have led to some cultivar diversification in modern Qimen production (planting higher-yielding modern selections), but the most prestigious Keemun productions remain Qimen Zhuye from heritage plantings.
