Nilgiris
Smooth, bright, less astringent than Assam. South Indian specialty with year-round production cycle.
Nilgiris ("Blue Mountains") is the most prominent southern Indian tea-producing region. The Nilgiri Hills in Tamil Nadu have a climate distinctly different from northern Indian tea regions (Darjeeling, Assam) — mild temperatures year-round, two monsoon seasons annually, and elevations that allow tea production at 1000-2000m without the freezing winters that pause northern Indian production. The result is year-round tea production with a premium winter flush (December-February) when slower growth produces concentrated character.
Nilgiri tea sits somewhere between Assam and Darjeeling in cup character: smoother and less astringent than Assam, more substantial-bodied than Darjeeling. The "Nilgiri Frost" winter productions are the regional specialty — concentrated, complex black teas that command premium prices but remain less internationally famous than equivalent-quality Darjeelings. The Nilgiris also see substantial green tea and white tea production, particularly in recent decades as global market demand has diversified beyond black tea.
