Harney & Sons
Family-run American tea company founded in 1983 by John Harney. Best known for elegant tin packaging, flavored blends like Paris and Hot Cinnamon Spice, and SoHo flagship retail.
Harney & Sons occupies an unusual position in American tea: substantially larger than typical specialty operations but with editorial credentials that traditional commodity tea brands don't reach. John Harney founded the company in 1983 after years in the hotel and restaurant supply business; his sons Mike and Paul have continued operating the company from its Millerton, New York headquarters. The brand became broadly recognized through its tin-packaged blends sold in upscale food retailers, gift shops, and hotel restaurants.
The SoHo flagship in New York City became a tea destination for both tourists and local enthusiasts — one of the few American tea retail experiences that approached the in-person depth of London or Paris tea shops. The flavored blends (Paris, Hot Cinnamon Spice, Tower of London) are the brand's most recognized products, but the underlying single-origin and traditional blend offerings are serious. The 2024 expansion into ready-to-drink iced teas extended the brand into supermarket coolers nationwide.
