Hangzhou
Gateway to West Lake (Xihu) Long Jing — among the most prestigious Chinese green tea producing regions. China National Tea Museum + access to authentic Shifeng plantings.
Hangzhou is the gateway city to West Lake (Xihu) Long Jing tea production — one of the most prestigious specialty tea origins in the world and a heavily-protected Chinese geographic indication. The West Lake protected production zone surrounds the famous West Lake to the city's west, including the most prestigious Shifeng (Lion Peak) area where premium Quntizhong heritage tea bushes still grow. During spring harvest season (late March through April, with the pre-Qingming early harvest commanding the highest prices), Hangzhou becomes a destination for both Chinese domestic tea tourism and serious international specialty tea visitors.
The China National Tea Museum (located along Longjing Road on the West Lake's western edge) is the major institutional reference for Chinese tea history and production — substantial exhibits covering tea's genetic origins in Yunnan, production methods across China's major tea categories, and the social history of Chinese tea drinking. Longjing village itself is accessible by city bus or short taxi from downtown Hangzhou — direct visits to tea farmers during harvest season produce the most authentic Long Jing tasting experiences available, though spring rates are premium and the most prestigious productions are largely pre-sold to Chinese collectors before reaching public retail. For specialty Chinese green tea travel, Hangzhou is essential.
