Bellocq Tea Atelier occupies an unusual position in American specialty tea: more aesthetic-aware and design-driven than most specialty tea brands while maintaining serious editorial credentials. Heidi Johannsen Stewart, Michael Shannon, and Scott Stewart opened the Greenpoint atelier in 2009 with a presentation aesthetic — yellow tins, deliberate typography, photographic catalog — that distinguished the brand visually from the broader American specialty tea category.
The blended teas — Black Sea, No. 50 (a Russian Caravan), Majorelle Mint — are the most visible products, but the single-origin offerings span Chinese, Indian, and Japanese sources at appropriate premium pricing. The London outpost extended the brand internationally. The retail and packaging design influence on subsequent American premium tea brands is substantial; the "yellow Bellocq tin" became visual shorthand for a certain kind of design-forward tea retail in the 2010s.
